Why plants die in summer transit
- Closed truck interior hits 50-55°C on highway stops
- No airflow means plants can't transpire — leaves cook from within
- Roots in small pots dry out in 36 hours
- Dark packing causes etiolation (yellowing) within 48 hours
The 10-day pre-move plant prep
Day -10 to -7
- Repot any plant due for a repot (if done closer to move, roots are shocked during transit)
- Trim all dead, yellow, or diseased foliage
- Treat for pests (neem oil spray) — pests multiply in warm, closed spaces
- Water deeply every 2-3 days — you want soil moist, not soggy, on move day
- Gradually reduce fertiliser (0% in the last week)
- Begin 1-2 hours of shade per day to "harden" plants for the darker transit
- Final pest check
- Water one final time the evening before
- Group plants by type (sun-lovers, shade-lovers, succulents) for easier re-acclimatisation later
Packing protocol for move day
- Individual packing — each plant gets its own carton or shaded plastic crate. Never stack or nest.
- Ventilation holes — cut 4-6 finger-sized holes per carton on opposite sides (airflow).
- Moisture wicking — damp (not wet) paper towels around the pot base; slow-release humidity.
- Stake tall plants — bamboo stakes stop stems bending inside the carton.
- Label "LIVE PLANT — THIS SIDE UP" in bright colour; good movers segregate these.
Transit protocol (demand these)
- Early-morning loading (before 9 AM) so plants spend the first 8 hours in relative cool
- Shaded parking at rest stops — not on sun-facing truck shoulders
- AC-cooled van upgrade for a 2-3 day route, genuinely worth the 15-20% premium if your plants are valuable or rare
- Daily unloading for overnight stops — the truck is a pizza oven after 5 PM; good movers shift plants to a shaded / AC room overnight on long hauls
Post-arrival care (first 7 days)
Day 1 — Unpack immediately. Place in shaded, filtered-light area (never direct sun). Day 2-3 — Light water only; roots may be stressed. Day 4-5 — Move to brighter but still indirect light. Day 6-7 — Resume normal light schedule, normal watering.
Do NOT — fertilise in the first 14 days; repot (if you can avoid it); expose to direct afternoon sun.
Cost of professional plant moving
For a typical 15-25 plant household:
- Add ₹2,500-4,000 for dedicated plant packing & ventilated crating
- Add ₹8,000-15,000 for AC-van upgrade on long-haul (only on routes > 500 km)
Should you just leave them?
