Australia runs the strictest biosecurity regime of any country we ship to, and it is fair rather than arbitrary: declare risk items, present them clean, and the inspection is a formality; hide or ignore them, and you pay for treatment, storage or destruction. REHOUSING PACKERS PVT LTD prepares India-to-Australia shipments with that in mind โ the packing day includes cleaning and separating risk items, and the inventory is written so the inspector can find them. For our general international process, start with the international relocation overview.
Your shipment is assessed by the Australian Border Force (customs and duty) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) (biosecurity). Both work from the same declaration: the B534 Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement, a four-page form you complete and sign by hand (digital signatures are generally not accepted), supported by a copy of your passport photo page and, for non-citizens, your visa.
Duty and GST: used personal and household effects generally enter free of duty and GST if you are arriving to take up residence, the goods are your own, and you have owned and used them for at least twelve months. Items under twelve months old, or that look new, may be assessed โ keep receipts for recent purchases. You do not have to be in Australia when the goods arrive, but you are typically expected to arrive within a set period of the import; ask us to confirm the current rule against your travel dates.
Biosecurity: DAFF assesses every B534 and frequently orders a physical inspection. You must declare "goods of concern" โ anything wooden, cane or bamboo, plant or animal material, food, seeds, soil-contactable items (shoes, garden tools, camping gear, bicycles) โ and note the carton numbers so they can be pulled without unpacking the whole consignment. Failing to declare risk items is an offence.
Indian homes carry a lot of what DAFF looks at. Here is how we handle the common items:
Your goods are delivered by the forwarder to an Approved Arrangement (AA) site for inspection. The site charges facilitation and storage fees (often invoiced as "quarantine fees", though they are not government charges); these are destination costs, and we give you the expected range before dispatch rather than letting them surprise you.
India-to-Australia is a shorter ocean lane than North America. Containers from Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Chennai reach Fremantle (Perth) first, then Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane; Adelaide is served by sea or by rail from Melbourne. Port-to-port is often around four to six weeks; door-to-door commonly runs six to eight weeks once export clearance, LCL consolidation, customs release and DAFF inspection are included. Perth is usually the quickest; Brisbane and Adelaide the longest.
Air freight for a student or a first-fortnight kit clears at Sydney, Melbourne or Perth in days and goes through the same B534 and biosecurity process.
Australia runs on 230 V, 50 Hz, so Indian mixers, grinders and induction plates work with a plug adaptor โ kitchen appliances are worth shipping. Television and set-top-box compatibility should be checked model by model.
Australian rentals are mostly unfurnished, which makes furniture more worth shipping than for the UK โ but only pieces that will clear biosecurity cleanly. Metal-frame, upholstered and sealed-timber furniture are low-risk; unfinished wood, cane and bamboo are higher-risk and may need treatment. Bedding, kitchenware, books and framed art are straightforward.
All Australia shipments carry complementary transit cover up to โน50,000; full declared-value cover is available at 3% of the declared value. Note that biosecurity treatment or destruction of undeclared items is not an insurable loss โ it is a compliance outcome โ which is one more reason we insist on declaring everything.
