The UK is the one destination where paperwork timing decides whether your move is tax-free or expensive. HM Revenue & Customs grants Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief on used household goods, but the relief must be approved before your shipment is declared at a UK port. Ship first and apply later, and you risk paying import VAT at 20% on your own furniture plus port storage while HMRC processes the form. REHOUSING PACKERS PVT LTD builds the UK move around that sequence: survey, ToR1 application, approval reference, then packing and dispatch. For how our international service works in general, see the international relocation overview.

ToR1 โ€” what it is, who qualifies, and when to apply

ToR1 is HMRC's online application for relief from customs duty and import VAT when you are moving your normal home to the UK. The typical conditions are that you have lived outside the UK for at least twelve consecutive months, that you have owned and used the goods for at least six months, that you will keep using them for the same purpose, and that you will not sell, lend or hire them out within twelve months of import.

When approved, HMRC issues a unique reference number (URN). Your customs agent declares the goods under the ToR customs procedure code using that URN, and the shipment clears without duty or VAT. Processing time varies โ€” allow several weeks and apply the moment you have a UK address, a job offer or tenancy, and your grouped inventory. You can apply before the shipment leaves India; you do not need the goods to have arrived.

Students are treated differently. If you are coming to the UK for full-time study, you generally do not need a ToR1 โ€” your agent declares the goods under the student procedure code with evidence of your course, and relief covers clothes, study equipment and household effects. Alcohol and tobacco are excluded from relief in every category.

We help you assemble the ToR1 pack โ€” grouped, non-branded inventory (HMRC prefers "kitchenware: 6 cartons" over brand names), proof of your Indian address and your UK address, and your visa or BRP โ€” and we do not dispatch a sea shipment until you have the URN in hand unless you instruct us in writing to accept the risk.

Ports, lanes and timing to London, the Midlands and the North

Containers from Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Chennai reach the UK through Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway, usually in about four to six weeks port to port, with door-to-door commonly running six to eight weeks once export clearance, consolidation and UK customs release are added. From those ports, delivery to London, Reading, Slough and Croydon is a short haul; Birmingham, Leicester, Coventry and Manchester add a day of trucking.

If you are joining in September for a course or a job with a fixed start, the sea shipment should leave India in late June or July. Air freight โ€” typical for students and for the "first two weeks" kit โ€” moves in days and clears at Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester.

What to ship to the UK โ€” and what to leave

UK housing is compact, and much of the rental market is furnished or part-furnished. Our surveyors will tell you plainly when a piece is not worth the freight:

LCL is the usual mode for UK-bound shipments of one to three bedrooms; an FCL 20 ft container makes sense for a full family home. We show you the crossover point on the quote.

Delivery inside the UK

Many UK addresses have narrow streets, permit parking, or flats above ground level without a lift. Tell us at survey; the destination partner will arrange parking suspensions or a smaller shuttle vehicle where councils require it, and we price the stair carry rather than surprising you on the day.

Insurance

Every UK shipment carries complementary transit cover up to โ‚น50,000. For the full household, declared-value cover is available at 3% of the declared value, and it is worth taking on an LCL shipment with two port handlings and a long lane. Declare values honestly on the inventory โ€” the same list serves HMRC and the insurer.

Start your UK move

Call or WhatsApp +91 87005 74566 with your origin city, UK destination, visa type and intended travel month, or use the contact page. We will book a survey and send you the ToR1 checklist the same week. Pre-departure storage in India is priced on our charges page.

FAQs โ€” India to UK

Do I need ToR1 approval before my goods leave India?
You need it before the goods are *declared* in the UK, and because approval can take weeks, we strongly advise having the URN before the sea shipment departs. Shipping without it risks 20% import VAT and port storage.
I am a student going to the UK โ€” do I file ToR1?
Usually not. Students coming for full-time study have their goods declared under a separate student procedure code with proof of enrolment. If you later decide to settle, you can apply for ToR within twelve months of graduation.
Will my Indian mixer grinder and appliances work in the UK?
Yes โ€” both countries use 230โ€“240 V, 50 Hz. You only need plug adaptors. This is one reason kitchen appliances are worth shipping to the UK when they are not worth shipping to North America.
How long does shipping from India to London take?
Roughly four to six weeks port to port by sea, and six to eight weeks door to door once export clearance, consolidation and UK customs are included. Air freight for a student consignment moves in days.
What are the insurance terms on an India to UK shipment?
Complementary cover up to โ‚น50,000 on every shipment; full declared-value cover available at 3% of declared value. Claims are assessed against the signed inventory and the delivery report.
