Singapore moves are the opposite of North American ones: the sea leg is short, the shipment is small, and the risk is not the ocean but the paperwork. Every import of used household goods into Singapore attracts GST unless GST relief is granted, and relief is granted only when the conditions are met and the application is filed correctly before clearance. REHOUSING PACKERS PVT LTD handles India-to-Singapore moves as a documentation exercise first and a freight exercise second. For our general international process, see the international relocation overview.

GST relief: the five conditions

Singapore Customs may grant GST relief on used household articles and personal effects if you are a foreigner relocating to Singapore (or a citizen/PR returning) and you can show that:

1. You are moving your place of residence to Singapore โ€” evidenced by an Employment Pass, S Pass, Dependant's Pass, Student Pass or the In-Principle Approval letter from the Ministry of Manpower. 2. You own the items. 3. You have used and possessed them for at least three months. 4. You will not sell, give away or dispose of them within three months of arrival. 5. The goods are imported within six months of your first arrival in Singapore.

For unaccompanied shipments, the destination agent submits an online Declaration of Facts (DOF) to Singapore Customs with your pass or IPA letter, passport, inventory and the bill of lading or air waybill โ€” one DOF per bill. If relief is approved, the goods clear without GST; if not, GST is paid through a Customs In-Payment permit before release. Relief never covers motor vehicles, liquor or tobacco.

The six-month window is the trap. Families who arrive first, settle in, and only then start thinking about "the rest of the stuff back in India" can run out of time. If you are likely to ship later, tell us at survey and we will hold goods in India and dispatch inside the window.

The lane: Chennai / Nhava Sheva to Singapore

Singapore is one of the shortest sea routes we run. Port-to-port from Chennai is often about a week; from Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Kolkata roughly one to two weeks depending on sailing. Door-to-door, including Indian export clearance, LCL consolidation, the DOF process and delivery, is commonly three to four weeks. Air freight lands in days and suits a student or a first-week kit, but for most families sea LCL is fast enough that air is rarely needed.

What fits a Singapore home

Condos and HDB flats are compact, and many expat rentals come furnished or part-furnished. Typical India-to-Singapore consignments run two to six cubic metres: kitchen essentials for Indian cooking, bedding, books, clothes, the mandir, a child's room, perhaps a dining set or a favourite sofa. Singapore runs on 230 V, 50 Hz (UK-style three-pin sockets), so Indian appliances work with an adaptor โ€” mixers, grinders, induction plates and rice cookers are worth bringing.

Leave behind: large wardrobes and beds unless the flat is unfurnished and the piece is exceptional; ceiling fans; anything chewing-gum-adjacent or otherwise on Singapore's controlled list. Small quantities of sealed, labelled dry spices are usually acceptable when declared; fresh, homemade or meat-based food is not.

Move-in bookings in condos and HDB blocks

Almost every Singapore condominium requires a move-in booking with management โ€” a fixed slot, a refundable deposit, lift padding and sometimes a weekday-only rule. HDB blocks have their own lift and loading norms. Our destination partner needs your building and management contact before the container lands so the delivery slot is booked, not improvised.

Insurance

Every Singapore shipment carries complementary transit cover up to โ‚น50,000; full declared-value cover is available at 3% of the declared value. Small consignments are still LCL with two port handlings; for anything beyond a student box, we recommend full cover.

FAQs โ€” India to Singapore

Will I pay GST on my own used furniture when moving to Singapore?
Not if GST relief is granted โ€” which requires that you are relocating, own the items, have used them for at least three months, will not dispose of them for three months, and import them within six months of first arriving. Otherwise GST is payable before release.
What is a Declaration of Facts?
The online application to Singapore Customs for GST relief on an unaccompanied personal-effects shipment. The destination agent files it with your pass or IPA letter, passport, inventory and bill of lading; one is needed per bill of lading or air waybill.
How long does shipping from India to Singapore take?
Roughly one to two weeks at sea and about three to four weeks door to door including export clearance, consolidation, GST relief processing and delivery. Chennai is usually the quickest origin.
Can I ship my car or two-wheeler to Singapore with my household goods?
No โ€” GST relief does not cover motor vehicles, and Singapore's vehicle import regime is separate and costly. Ask us before assuming a vehicle can travel.
What insurance applies to an India to Singapore shipment?
Complementary transit cover up to โ‚น50,000 on every shipment; full declared-value cover at 3% of the declared value. Claims are settled against the signed inventory and delivery report.
