India to Saudi Arabia Relocation — Iqama First, Inspection-Ready Always

Saudi Arabia is a rewarding destination for Indian professionals and a demanding one for household shipments. The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) exempts used personal and household goods from duty for residents transferring to the Kingdom, but clearance turns on your iqama (residence permit), your documents must match your passport name exactly, and every shipment should be packed expecting a full physical inspection. The iqama and the exemption window

Under current Saudi customs regulations, personal belongings and used household items brought by expatriates arriving to reside in the Kingdom are exempt from customs duty when imported within a period after arrival — widely reported as six months — and within the limits of personal use. First-time expatriates must show proof of arrival to take up residence. Vehicles are not counted as personal belongings, and goods that look new, sealed or commercial in quantity can be assessed; VAT treatment depends on how the shipment is classified at clearance.

In practice, the customs broker needs your iqama to lodge the clearance on the ZATCA/Fasah platform, and the shipping line will not release a delivery order without it. An entry-stamped work visa alone is usually not enough for release. So the sequence is: arrive → iqama issued → shipment clears. Sea transit from India to Jeddah or Dammam is short — often one to three weeks port to port — which means we typically pack in India, hold in our warehouse, and dispatch once your iqama is imminent or issued, so the container does not sit at a Saudi port accruing storage.

Documents for KSA clearance: passport copy with the entry-visa page, iqama copy, original bill of lading or air waybill, a detailed and valued inventory/packing list, purchase receipts for electrical and electronic appliances, an authorisation letter to the customs broker (attested as the port requires — often through the Saudi Chamber of Commerce for private-sector employees), and a certificate of insurance if applicable. Names on every document must match the passport exactly — no initials or abbreviations.

Packing for a full inspection

Saudi customs inspects household shipments more thoroughly than most countries, so we pack the KSA consignment differently:

• Electronics (TV, laptop, cameras, speakers, gaming consoles) are inventoried with model and serial numbers and their receipts placed in a document folder. Without receipts, customs values them locally and may assess duty on anything over the personal-use threshold.
• Books, DVDs, hard drives and media are listed clearly; anything that could conflict with Saudi law (religious material other than for personal Islamic practice, political content, adult content) must not travel. Family photographs and school books are fine.
• Medicines travel only with prescriptions and only if permitted; many common Indian over-the-counter items are controlled in KSA. We provide a checklist at survey.
• Prohibited outright: alcohol, pork products, narcotics, weapons and replicas, drones without approval, e-cigarettes in many cases, and religious articles of other faiths intended for display (personal items for private use are generally tolerated but should be minimal and packed discreetly).
• Palletised or lift-van loading is required at Saudi seaports; loose-loaded containers attract penalties, so we pack LCL consignments into lift vans and FCL into palletised stacks.

Which port for which city

• Riyadh and the central region: containers usually enter through Dammam and move by rail or truck to the Riyadh dry port for clearance and delivery; door-to-door commonly runs four to six weeks including the hold-for-iqama period.
• Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, Taif (western region): Jeddah Islamic Port, direct from Nhava Sheva or Mundra; door-to-door often three to five weeks.
• Dammam, Al Khobar, Jubail, Dhahran (eastern region): King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam; short inland leg.

Air freight to Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam moves in days and suits a documents-and-essentials box; it still needs the iqama for release.

What to ship from India

Saudi Arabia runs on 230 V, 60 Hz in most residential areas (with some 127 V circuits in older buildings), so Indian appliances generally work with an adaptor — confirm your compound or apartment supply. Furnished compounds are common for company-housed staff; independent apartments in Riyadh and Jeddah are often unfurnished. Ship furniture only when housing is unfurnished and the piece justifies freight; always ship kitchen essentials, bedding, and personal items.

Every Saudi shipment carries complementary transit cover up to ₹50,000; full declared-value cover is available at 3% of the declared value. Customs assessment of undeclared new items is not an insured loss.
