India to Dubai & UAE Household Shipping — Timed to Your Residence Visa

The UAE is the closest major destination we ship to — a container from Nhava Sheva or Mundra reaches Jebel Ali in days, not weeks — and yet UAE moves go wrong more often than longer ones, for one reason: shipments arriving before the owner's residence visa is in place. Dubai Customs and the shipping lines require your visa and Emirates ID (or at minimum the entry-stamped employment visa and Emirates ID application) before a personal-effects shipment is released. How Dubai treats used household goods

Personal effects and used household goods imported by a UAE resident are exempt from customs duty after inspection. Brand-new items — a TV still in its sealed carton, boxed appliances, furniture with tags — are treated as imports and attract 5% customs duty, and VAT at 5% applies on taxable shipments. The practical advice is the same one experienced Gulf movers give: if you have bought something new for the move, unbox it, use it, and pack it with the rest of the household rather than in its retail carton. Inspectors look for factory-sealed boxes.

Dubai Customs may also require a refundable deposit or a valued "dummy invoice" for assessment; procedures vary by port and emirate (Jebel Ali and Al Maktoum are Dubai; Khalifa Port serves Abu Dhabi; Sharjah has its own ports). Documents for UAE clearance: passport copy, valid UAE residence visa (or employment visa with entry stamp plus Emirates ID application if the card is pending), Emirates ID copy, valued inventory/packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, and authorisation letters to the moving company and shipping line for clearance and delivery-order release.

Timing the shipment to the visa — three common patterns

1. Visa already stamped (family joining a working spouse): ship immediately; door-to-door from Delhi NCR or Mumbai to Dubai is commonly two to four weeks by sea including export clearance, consolidation, Jebel Ali clearance and delivery. 2. Employment visa issued, residence stamping pending: we pack and hold the goods in our Indian warehouse, then dispatch when the entry stamp and Emirates ID application are done. Sea transit is short enough that this costs a week or two, not a season. 3. Visa not yet issued: do not ship. Survey, quote and pack if you must vacate, but the goods wait in India. This avoids port storage and demurrage in the UAE, which accumulate daily and are billed to you.

Sea, air, or a van? What makes sense for the Gulf

• Sea LCL is the default for one- to three-bedroom homes: priced per cubic metre, short transit, sensible cost.
• FCL 20 ft suits a full villa's worth of furniture; the container is sealed at your door in India and opened at your Dubai address.
• Air freight is rarely necessary for Dubai because the sea leg is so short — but it is useful for a documents-and-essentials box if you fly tomorrow and the residence visa is already done.
• Groupage to the northern emirates (Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah) is delivered by truck from Jebel Ali or through the emirate's own port; ask us which is faster for your address.

What to send from India — and what stays

Both India and the UAE use 230–240 V, 50 Hz, so mixers, grinders, microwaves and induction plates work with a plug adaptor. Air-conditioners and fridges are usually not worth the freight given UAE prices. Indian furniture does well in Dubai apartments and villas; unfurnished rentals are common.

Do not include: alcohol beyond permitted allowances, e-cigarettes and vaping products, drones without approval, narcotics and many prescription medicines without prescriptions and approvals, religious material or media that conflicts with UAE law, pork products, and anything counterfeit. Medicines are the item Indian families most often get wrong — check your prescription medicines against the UAE controlled-substance list before packing them.

Delivery in Dubai buildings and communities

Most Dubai towers and gated communities require a move-in permit (NOC from the landlord, building management booking, sometimes a refundable deposit and a lift-protection booking). Insurance

Every UAE shipment carries complementary transit cover up to ₹50,000; full declared-value cover is available at 3% of the declared value. The lane is short, but LCL consignments are still handled at two ports, so we recommend full cover for a household.
