International Relocation from Dehradun — From the Doon Valley to a Container

Dehradun sends two very different kinds of shipment abroad: a student's 100 kg of bedding, utensils and books to a Canadian or Australian campus, and a retired colonel's curated household to a daughter in Virginia after forty years of postings. Both leave the valley the same way — by road to a plains depot, because Uttarakhand's hills do not have one. Dadri or Pantnagar: the road out of the valley

• ICD Dadri (Greater Noida, ~250 km) — the usual choice: the widest range of weekly LCL closings, rail to Mundra, Pipavav and JNPT, and on the way to Delhi's airport for any air box. Five to six hours by road.
• ICD Pantnagar (Rudrapur, ~230 km) — Uttarakhand's own depot; used for FCL when a rail slot suits or when a consolidator is closing a container for your lane there.
• Air freight — Jolly Grant has no meaningful international cargo; the first-fortnight box flies from Delhi (IGI), about 250 km, and — as cargo services build — potentially Noida International Airport near Dadri. We name the airport at quote.

The road leg appears as its own line. Monsoon (July–September) landslides and traffic diversions on the Dehradun–Delhi and Mussoorie roads can add a day; we build that slack into schedules.

The student box and the officer's household

Students: Dehradun's schools and colleges send hundreds abroad each August–September and January. For almost all, 60–150 kg of air freight via Delhi — bedding, utensils, clothes, books — beats a sea shipment on cost and speed. Australia and New Zealand refuse most food and inspect wooden and sports items; Canada and the UK are gentler on sealed dry snacks. Book early; air capacity tightens in intake months.

Retired and defence families: the shipment is usually 4–10 cubic metres of a lifetime — regimental memorabilia, brass, framed photographs, books, a few pieces of solid furniture, quilts for a Canadian winter. Two points we settle at survey: the consignee abroad is the importer (your child's visa or PR governs customs relief, and names must match across documents), and cantonment access — Clement Town, Garhi Cantt and other defence areas need a crew ID list submitted in advance.

Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Haridwar

• Mussoorie: hill roads and Mall Road restrictions mean no truck access at most homes; the crew hand-carries or uses a small vehicle to a transfer point at the base, then consolidates in Dehradun. Priced at survey; a day longer.
• Rishikesh and Haridwar: consolidate in Dehradun or go directly to Dadri when that is shorter; the road leg is shown separately. Ashram-area and ghat-side lanes are checked at survey.

Dehradun homes and the puja shelf

Bungalows on Rajpur Road, in Dalanwala and Vasant Vihar usually allow a container vehicle at the gate; apartments on Sahastradhara Road and in Race Course need society permission and lift slots. Dehradun shipments often carry a well-stocked mandir — brass and stone items travel everywhere; plant-based puja materials stay home for Australia and New Zealand.
