International Relocation from Guwahati — The Northeast's Only Depot, and What Can Cross a Border

Guwahati is the Northeast's gateway abroad, and it has the region's only container depot: ICD Amingaon, across the Brahmaputra on the north bank, rail-linked to Kolkata and Haldia. Built for tea, it handles export containers weekly — which means household closings exist but are limited, and we check rather than assume. Guwahati is also where Shillong, Silchar, Tezpur, Dibrugarh and Jorhat households consolidate. And it raises a question sharper here than anywhere in India: how much of a Northeastern home — cane, bamboo, silk, bell metal — can actually cross a biosecurity border. Amingaon when a closing runs; Kolkata otherwise

• ICD Amingaon (~15 km) — FCL containers stuffed at a Guwahati home or at the depot and railed to Kolkata/Haldia; LCL when a consolidator is closing a container for your destination — limited but real. Monsoon and Brahmaputra floods can affect the north-bank approach; we plan for it.
• Kolkata CFS (~1,000 km by road, or rail via Amingaon) — the widest LCL choice; sailings from Kolkata or Haldia, transhipping at Colombo or a Southeast Asian hub.
• West-coast routing via Dadri — considered for the Gulf and parts of Europe when a direct west-coast sailing beats a transhipped eastern route.

The inland leg is shown separately. Air freight: LGBI airport has limited international cargo; Gulf and long-haul boxes usually fly from Kolkata (NSCBI) or Delhi (IGI), connected from Guwahati. We name the airport at quote.

Cane, bamboo, silk and bell metal: what crosses which border

• Cane and bamboo furniture, japi, baskets, murha stools — for Australia and New Zealand these are high-risk biosecurity items: they must be free of bark, borer, soil and insects and declared; untreated pieces are frequently ordered for treatment or destroyed at the owner's cost. We inspect every piece at survey and tell you which are likely to clear. For Canada, the USA and the UK they are inventoried and generally admitted when clean.
• Assam silk — muga, eri, pat mekhela sador: personal quantities are personal effects, packed dry with acid-free tissue in sealed poly with silica gel; bulk new stock is commercial and declared separately.
• Bell-metal (kahor) and brass from Sarthebari: inventoried item by item with photographs.
• Tea: sealed, commercially packaged tea in household quantities is usually tolerated everywhere when declared; loose leaf in bulk looks commercial and is treated as such; Australia and New Zealand assess it.
• Food — pitha, dried fish, bamboo-shoot pickle, khar: assume refusal for Australia and New Zealand; carry small quantities in baggage for other destinations rather than in the container.

Floods, hills and handover dates

• June–September monsoon and Brahmaputra floods can cut roads and the Amingaon approach for days; slack is built in and riverside homes are advised to pack earlier.
• Hill-slope lanes in Christian Basti, Kahilipara and parts of Zoo Road: a mid-size vehicle to the nearest wide road and hand-carry, priced at survey.
• Government, ONGC/Oil India and defence quarters in Dispur, Maligaon and Narangi: handover dates set by transfer orders — we pack to the date, hold inventoried goods in a Guwahati warehouse, and dispatch on the container cut-off; crew ID lists go to the quarters office in advance.
• Bihu (mid-April, mid-January, mid-October): crews and roads are affected for a few days each; plan around them.
